"Oopsies?"

Sorry about the childish-sounding title of this piece, but I have used the term to expound upon a few points.

The word "oopsies" used above clearly is an utterance applied to someone who has spilled or broken something, injured themselves, or something along those lines.

Let me use a totally-different word conveying what I think is an entirely opposite attitude intended to cause a completely different response.

Instead of exclaiming: "Oopsies!" or "Oopsy!" - how about rather declaring the word: "Shame!" or - similarly: "Shame on you!"

Of course, more brutal and vulgar expletives could be spoken in place of that which (for whatever intention) despises or condemns the one who did what some call "doing something wrong" or "stupid" - instead of merely excusing that same one by saying that they did something "creative" or "different" or "unusual."

To err is human; to forgive is divine the axiom goes. By saying that, the implication and inference is that doing what should not have been done, or doing what one should not continue to do . . . is always to be pardoned, is to be expected, is to not expect too much of someone nor to expect perfection, even some of the time but assuredly all the time.

But, what types of mistakes or errors committed (and obviously not "performed") by humans are to be expected or tolerated? How frequently are they to be expected or tolerated? How severe can they be before the limits of patience and forgiveness are reached?

Scripture does indicate that certain errors done by humans should be eventually and kindly exposed with proclaimed correction in a spirit of courtesy, politeness, and gentleness.

Plainly, there was fear! Great embarrassment! Dismay!

Was that a proper response? Whether it was or was not, that's what I experienced!

However, I did not slink down into the car seat with sobs of self-pitying remorse, weeping, and near-catatonic grief. I was overcome with paralyzing regret, nor do I think that I should have been.

The above-described reaction was based on the fact that I had innocently driven into the wrong lane out of non-watchful ignorance, but had I deliberately driven into the wrong lane out of rebellion and defiance, my reaction would not be fear but instead irrational egocentric insanity and foolhardy belligerence . . . which police who had perhaps "caught me in the act" would have taken into fair-and-just vengeful and rightfully-retaliatory consideration.

What was the motivation of Eve gullibly believing the half-lies of the deceptive Serpent in the Garden of Eden? Was she defiantly out to "give God the 3rd finger" and "thumb her nose" at the Lord? Or did she merely "want to try something different for variety" which looked like eating the fruit of the Forbidden Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil would be in various ways beneficial and profitable to her?

What is our motivation when we give in to enticing temptation? Is it our intention to maliciously "slap God in the face" by doing what He had commanded us to not do?

If we stole something from a close friend, and then saw him or her suffer in some way or ways because of it, would we not feel bad, and understandably so? If we were seduced by some foxy harlot and in one or more ways committed immorality with her, would we not feel regretful and grieved that we had cheated on our faithful and trusting spouse?

Genesis 6:6 And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.

First Samuel 15:35 And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
First Samuel 20:3 But David replied, "Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he thinks, 'Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.' But truly, as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death."
First Samuel 20:34 And Jonathan rose from the table in fierce anger and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had disgraced him.

Nehemiah 8:10 Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."
Nehemiah 8:11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, "Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved."

Job 30:25 Did not I weep for him whose day was hard? Was not my soul grieved for the poor?

Psalm 35:14 . . . as though I grieved for my friend or my brother; I went about as one who laments his mother, bowed down and in mourning.
Psalm 78:40 How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert!

Isaiah 19:10 Those who are the pillars of the land will be crushed, and all who work for hire will be grieved.
Isaiah 54:6 "For the LORD has called you like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, like a wife of youth when she is cast off," says your God.
Isaiah 63:10 But they rebelled and grieved his holy Spirit; therefore He turned to be their enemy, and Himself fought against them.

Amos 6:6 . . . who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!

Mark 3:5 And He looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was restored.

John 21:17 He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.

Second Corinthians 7:8 For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it (though I did regret it), for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while.
Second Corinthians 7:9 As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting; for you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.

Guilt occurring because of some incorrect or improper action or actions is a typical, frequent, and common response . . . and how guilt and even remorse is resolved is crucial not only for us personally, but for the ones we grieved, and especially for our Creator who is both watching and concerned about everything everyone does.

To blush has its benefits, and ones who do not blush because of wrongdoing are by definition wicked and evil.

Jeremiah 6:15 Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; at the time that I punish them, they shall be overthrown," says the LORD.
Jeremiah 8:12 Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they shall be overthrown, says the LORD.

To define incorrect thinking, speech, and behavior as a mere "oopsy" or "mistake" when it pertains to Biblical commands of and from Holy Scripture is certainly not enough and quite out of place. In those cases, and as qualified by Holy Writ, the errors deserve the much more serious term: sin . . . something we all have done, do, and probably will do in the future.

Whatever the 'sin,' whatever type or frequency or severity, God's nature and requirement for his human creatures is absolute perfection 24/7 by them, and to compensate for Him imposing the Stumbling Blocks of the Tempting Serpent, the dangerous and lethal Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and giving humans to Free Will to screw up (excuse me: sin), He provided His perfect Son Jesus to become the sacrificial atonement (relating to historical-fact fatal crucifixion) absolving the sins of His creatures who humbly and penitently believe that that is so.

WHY "humbly?" WHY "penitently?" Simply because:

(1) We acknowledge that our doing what was wrong, and not simply an "oopsie" (i.e. what He commanded us to not do) was indeed wrong, and we have the same feelings as we had accidently and ignorantly (though NOT deliberately!) driving into the wrong lane into head-on traffic (e.g. fear, embarrassment, dismay), and

(2) We fully intend to never again do the same stupid sin, nor anything like it, and

(3) We recognize that we cannot make up for our sin or sins by anything we have done, can do, or could do (other than believe God's saving Gospel of expiation for us).
