Theocrazies:

Are Militaristic Major World Religions Compatible With Democracies?

Reading what are considered the "holy books" of such major world religions as Judeo-Christianity and Islam, we find therein non-disputable references to not only proselitize others to convince them to believe and accommodate to doctrinal ideas with compliant behavioral response in accord with precepts contained in those written sources.

Many talking heads on television and radio have, for example, alluded to and disdained what they have deemed as "abusive treatment against women" "imposed" by sharia law of islamic muslims. Such "abuse" has, by them, been specified as requirement for women to have to be accompanied by a man when walking in public, forbidding women from driving a car, from voting, from holding political office, being disallowed credible defense and instead faulted after being raped, being segregated from men during religious worship services, being physically bashed as punishment for various perceived or presumed infractions, and having to supposedly sweat and suffer being overdressed with burka and hijab in warm-temperature situations.

A few examples follow:

Leviticus 19:20 If a man lies carnally with a woman who is a slave, betrothed to another man and not yet ransomed or given her freedom, an inquiry shall be held. They shall not be put to death, because she was not free . . .
20:9 For every one who curses his father or his mother shall be put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother, his blood is upon him.
20:10 If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall be put to death.
20:11 The man who lies with his father's wife has uncovered his father's nakedness; both of them shall be put to death, their blood is upon them.
20:12 If a man lies with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall be put to death; they have committed incest, their blood is upon them.
20:13 If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them.
20:15 If a man lies with a beast, he shall be put to death; and you shall kill the beast.
20:16 If a woman approaches any beast and lies with it, you shall kill the woman and the beast; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them.
20:27 A man or a woman who is a medium or a wizard shall be put to death; they shall be stoned with stones, their blood shall be upon them.
24:16 He who blasphemes the name of the LORD shall be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him; the traveler as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.
20:16 If a woman approaches any beast and lies with it, you shall kill the woman and the beast; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them.
20:27 A man or a woman who is a medium or a wizard shall be put to death; they shall be stoned with stones, their blood shall be upon them.
24:16 He who blasphemes the name of the LORD shall be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him; the sojourner as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.

Leviticus 27:1 The LORD said to Moses,
2 Say to the people of Israel, "When a man makes a special vow of persons to the LORD at your valuation,
3 then your valuation of a male from twenty years old up to sixty years old shall be fifty shekels of silver, according to the shekel of the sanctuary.
4 If the person is a female, your valuation shall be thirty shekels.
5 If the person is from five years old up to twenty years old, your valuation shall be for a male twenty shekels, and for a female ten shekels.
6 If the person is from a month old up to five years old, your valuation shall be for a male five shekels of silver, and for a female your valuation shall be three shekels of silver.
7 And if the person is sixty years old and upward, then your valuation for a male shall be fifteen shekels, and for a female ten shekels."

Numbers 5:18 And the priest shall set the woman before the LORD, and unbind the hair of the woman's head, and place in her hands the cereal offering of remembrance, which is the cereal offering of jealousy. And in his hand the priest shall have the water of bitterness that brings the curse.
Numbers 5:19 Then the priest shall make her take an oath, saying, 'If no man has lain with you, and if you have not turned aside to uncleanness, while you were under your husband's authority, be free from this water of bitterness that brings the curse.

Numbers 30:9 But any vow of a widow or of a divorced woman, anything by which she has bound herself, shall stand against her.
10 And if she vowed in her husband's house, or bound herself by a pledge with an oath,
11 and her husband heard of it, and said nothing to her, and did not oppose her; then all her vows shall stand, and every pledge by which she bound herself shall stand.
12 But if her husband makes them null and void on the day that he hears them, then whatever proceeds out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning her pledge of herself, shall not stand: her husband has made them void, and the LORD will forgive her.
13 Any vow and any binding oath to afflict herself, her husband may establish, or her husband may make void.

Deuteronomy 13:6 If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son, or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, entices you secretly, saying, 'Let us go and serve other gods,' which neither you nor your fathers have known,
7 some of the gods of the peoples that are round about you, whether near you or far off from you, from the one end of the earth to the other,
8 you shall not yield to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him, nor shall you conceal him;
9 but you shall kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
10 You shall stone him to death with stones, because he sought to draw you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
11 And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and never again do any such wickedness as this among you.
12 If you hear in one of your cities, which the LORD your God gives you to dwell there,
13 that certain base fellows have gone out among you and have drawn away the inhabitants of the city, saying, 'Let us go and serve other gods,' which you have not known,
14 then you shall inquire and make search and ask diligently; and behold, if it be true and certain that such an abominable thing has been done among you,
15 you shall surely put the inhabitants of that city to the sword, destroying it utterly, all who are in it and its cattle, with the edge of the sword.
16 You shall gather all its spoil into the midst of its open square, and burn the city and all its spoil with fire, as a whole burnt offering to the LORD your God; it shall be a heap for ever, it shall not be built again.
17 None of the devoted things shall cleave to your hand; that the LORD may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and show you mercy, and have compassion on you, and multiply you, as he swore to your fathers,
18 if you obey the voice of the LORD your God, keeping all his commandments which I command you this day, and doing what is right in the sight of the LORD your God.

Deuteronomy 22:21 . . . then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has committed folly in Israel by playing the harlot in her father's house; so you shall purge the evil from the among you [without higher-court appeal, pardon, nor parole?].
22:24 then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor's wife; so you shall purge the evil from the midst of you.

Deuteronomy 32:42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh--with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the long-haired heads of the enemy.

Second Samuel 13:14 But he would not listen to her; and being stronger than she, he forced her, and lay with her.
15 Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred; so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, "Get up, be gone."
16 But she said to him, "No, my brother; for this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other which you did to me." But he would not listen to her.
17 He called the young man who served him and said, "Put this woman out of my presence, and bolt the door after her."
18 Now she was wearing a full-length long-sleeved robe; for in such were the virgin daughters of the king traditionally attired. So his servant put her out, and bolted the door after her.
19 And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent the full-length long-sleeved robe which she wore; and she laid her hand on her head, and went away, crying aloud as she went.

Psalm 137:9 Happy shall he be who takes your little ones and dashes them against the rock!

Ecclesiastes 7:26 And I found more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and whose hands are fetters; he who pleases God escapes her, but the sinner is taken by her.
27 Hey, this is what I found, says the Preacher, adding one thing to another to find the sum,
28 which my mind has sought repeatedly, but I have not found. One man among a thousand I found, but a woman among all these I have not found.
29 Hey, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many devices.

Isaiah 3:12 My people: [bratty shrieking?] children are their oppressors, and [sexist-feminist?] women rule over them. Oh my people, your leaders mislead you, and confuse the course of your paths.
16 The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet;
17 the Lord will smite with a scab the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts.
24 Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a girdle, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth; instead of beauty, shame.

Isaiah 47:1 Come down and sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called tender and delicate.
2 Take the millstones and grind meal, put off your veil, strip off your robe, uncover your legs, pass through the rivers.
3Your nakedness shall be uncovered, and your shame shall be seen. I will take vengeance, and I will spare no one.
4 Our Redeemer: the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.
5 Sit in silence, and go into darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans; for you shall no more be called the mistress of kingdoms.
6 I was angry with my people, I profaned my heritage; I gave them into your hand, you showed them no mercy; on the aged you made your yoke exceedingly heavy.
7 You said, "I shall be mistress for ever," so that you did not lay these things to heart or remember their end.
8 Now therefore hear this, you lover of pleasures, who sit securely, who say in your heart, "I am, and there is no one besides me; I shall not sit as a widow or know the loss of children":
9 These two things shall come to you in a moment, in one day; the loss of children and widowhood shall come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many sorceries and the great power of your enchantments.
10 You felt secure in your wickedness, you said, "No one sees me"; your wisdom and your knowledge led you astray, and you said in your heart, "I am, and there is no one besides me."
11 But evil shall come upon you, for which you cannot atone; disaster shall fall upon you, which you will not be able to expiate; and ruin shall come on you suddenly, of which you know nothing.
12 Stand fast in your enchantments and your many sorceries, with which you have labored from your youth; perhaps you may be able to succeed, perhaps you may inspire terror.
13 You are wearied with your many counsels; let them stand forth and save you, those who divide the heavens, who gaze at the stars, who at the new moons predict what shall befall you.
15 Such to you are those with whom you have labored, who have trafficked with you from your youth; they wander about each in his own direction; there is no one to save you.

Jeremiah 2:20 For long ago you broke your yoke and burst your bonds; and you said, 'I will not serve.' Yea, upon every high hill and under every green tree you bowed down as a harlot.
21 Yet I planted you a choice vine, wholly of pure seed. How then have you turned degenerate and become a wild vine?
22 Though you wash yourself with lye and use much soap [VD is more than skin-deep!], the stain of your guilt is still before me, says the Lord GOD.
23 How can you say, 'I am not defiled, I have not gone after the Baals'? Look at your way in the valley; know what you have done: a restive young camel interlacing her tracks,
24 a wild ass used to the wilderness, in her heat sniffing the wind! Who can restrain her lust? None who seek her need weary themselves; in her month they will find her.
25 Keep your feet from going unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said, 'It is hopeless, for I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.'

Nahum 3:12 All your fortresses are like fig trees with first-ripe figs--if shaken they fall into the mouth of the eater.
Nahum 3:13 Hey, your troops are women in your midst. The gates of your land are wide open to your foes; fire has devoured your bars.

Matthew 15:22 And hey, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, "Have mercy on me, Oh Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon."
23 But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and begged Him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us."
24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
25 But she came and knelt before Him, saying, "Lord, help me."
26 And He answered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."

First Corinthians 11:9 Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
10 That is why a woman ought to have a veil on her head, because of the angels.
11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman;
12 for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God.
13 Judge for yourselves; is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
14 Does not nature itself teach you that for a man to wear long hair is degrading to him,
15 but if a woman has long hair, it is her pride? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
16 If any one is disposed to be contentious, we recognize no such practice [of allowing anyone to regard a woman's long hair as a prayer veil or covering], nor do the churches of God.

First Corinthians 14:34 Let your women keep silence in the churches, for it is not allowed for them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also says the law.
First Corinthians 14:35 And if they would learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home, for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

First Timothy 2:8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;
9 also that women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly in decent apparel, not with hair plaitings or gold or pearls or costly attire
10 but by good works, as befits women who profess religion.
11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness.
12 Iallow no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent.
13 For Adam [applicable to ALL humanity of ALL time - before and outside "the church" only] was formed first, then Eve;
14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.
15 Yet woman will be saved through bearing children, if she continues in faith and love and holiness, with sobriety.

First Peter 3:7 Likewise you husbands, live considerately with your wives, bestowing honor on the woman as the [inferior gender], since you are joint heirs of the grace of life, in order that your prayers may not be hindered.

Such are the requisites of sharia [Oh, excuse me . . . I meant Judeo-Christian Biblical] law. My deepest apologies.

Both Islam and Judeo-Christianity (so named because of the inclusion of strict Torah Law of the Pentateuch with the Writings and The Prophets of the Old Testament combined with the New Testament) are meant, at least by those espousing the Christian religion, to be the mandatory theocratic government for everyone on the planet:

Matthew 27:18 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Matthew 27:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Matthew 27:20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and wow, I am with you always, to the close of the age."

Not being that familiar with the exact and specific contents of the islamic Qur'an, I do not know of any similar mandate required by Koran-author Mohammed and additional scribes associated with that so-called "holy" book of muslims, but I suspect that there is similar directive for global application of whatever moralistic admonitions are contained within that Koran.

Recall when pagan Roman dictatorship encountered Christian monarchy according to the following historical record:

Matthew 27:11 Now Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor asked Him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus said, "You have said so."
Mark 15:2 And Pilate asked Him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" And He answered him, "You have said so."
Luke 23:3 And Pilate asked Him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" And He answered him, "You have said so."
John 18:36 Jesus answered, "My kingship is not of this world; if my kingship were of this world, my servants would fight, that I might not be handed over to the Jews; but my kingship is not from the world.
John 18:37 Pilate said to Him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Every one who is of the truth hears my voice."

Such apparent pacificism? Not exactly the [bloody] symbolic sword of islam!

Reminds me of English-tyranny-emigrating Christianity-oriented pilgrim pioneers coming into sparsely-populated american-indian territory not partitioned with English-language geographical-delineation markers . . . not the same when Japan attacked the United States Navy base at Pearl Harbor, nor when Hitler invaded Poland.

But jealous disbelieving jews tried to make a liar out of Jesus (and paid the 'We Have No King But Caesar/Nero/Hitler' holocaustic price in 70 A.D. and in the 1930s and 40s) with:

John 19:18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.
19 Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews."
20 Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.
21 The chief priests of the Jews then said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'This man said, I am King of the Jews.'"
22 Pilate [in a possible previously-extremely-duressed furious rage] answered, "What I have written I have written."

Acts 18:14 But when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, "If it were a matter of wrongdoing or vicious crime, I should have reason to bear with you, Oh Jews;
15 but since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves; I refuse to be a judge of these things."
16 And he drove them from the tribunal.

Questions abound.

IS any type of "big-tent-inclusive" democracy compatible with, superior to, or deficient, compared to either the religious theocracy of Islam or of Judeo-Christianity?
Can the tenants of and obedience to the up-to-execution-for-noncompliance dogma of either Islam or or Judeo-Christianity able to operationally function within a pluralistic democracy?
Is it any business of religiously-based Islam or of Judeo-Christianity to interfere with, regulate, and butt into behaviors or misbehaviors described in the Koran or in the Old-and-New-Testament Bible of Judeo-Christianity?

In all honesty and forthrightness, adherents of both major religions mentioned claim "God" as The Source of "revealed sacred writings." Thus, the obligation (or lack of it) for all who are supposed to accommodate to either major religion has been, is, and will continue to be determined by how concordant recipients of the so-called "reveal sacred writings" are to the obvious displayed nature of the Creator and entities within His environment the faithful perceive to find themselves within.

Does the Creator force people to do this or that as specified in whatever "revealed sacred writings?" If they obey the theology and suppositions of whatever "revealed sacred writings," are they satisfied, fulfilled, and joyful - or instead consign themselves to disappointment, frustration, confusion, resentment, deprivation, bodily harm, disease, pain, and death after applying admonitions of whatever "revealed sacred writings?" Do the alleged "inspired sacred writings" help them to relate to others in cooperative fellowship and comradery, or instead incite rude criticism and senseless insult, harshness and cruelty, hateful and discriminatory disassociative alienation, and even assaultive combat?

The Creator has clearly made the equivalent of a huge checkers game and everything related for everyone on Earth. Each person interacts with and against others using their metaphorical checkers pieces. What one guy or gal does directly affects what the other guy or gal will do in response during the rules-bound-and-obligatory checkers game.

Also, each person has been placed into the equivalent of a lifelong football field of a lifetime football game, with the Lord having made a benign playing field, with benign goal posts, benign yard-line demarcations, impartial referees, along with a set of known rules with associative penalties for the equivalence of roughing the kicker, offsides, clipping, delay of game, backfield in motion, and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Admittedly, the checkers and football analogies have limited application, being that life is not or not meant to be an antagonistic dog-eat-dog world where everyone is wearing milkbone underwear. Sociological wellbeing for everyone is not merely an adversarial competition of winners and losers, but best when it rather is comprised of a big happy family of various levels of local-to-larger neighborliness.

And a government agreed to of the people, by the people, and for the people - both the governed and those appointed who govern them - of necessity consists of an assortment of different people who agree on a set of statutes to adhere to - violations against which are punishable by various types and degrees appropriate to them.

In other words, one person's freedom ends where the other person's freedom begins . . . but fortunately there is little-to-considerable overlap where the interests and intentions of some or many are identical.

A rebellious and even treasonous declaration of "Keep your laws off my body" is therefore a belligerent declaration of hostility and even war against the government and previously-agreed-upon modus operandi of the majority of citizens having formed their government which defiant anti-government traitors-of-sorts are confrontationally opposing - and whoever of which person(s) [understandably?] overpower and [thankfully?] suppress the noxiously non-conformant enemy will be manifested by which person(s) have and utilitize greater police, law-enforcement, or military power.

Currently, there is a controversy about whether homosexuals should be allowed to not simply sexually pair off together, but even become "legally married" with all the civil benefits.

To some, making restrictions (especially adiaphoric or nitpicky ones) on who should proclaim marital loyalty to who or what, and with exhaustivly-complicated-or-detailed specifications on how and when and so on . . . are trifles which should be relegated to non-government-regulated, constitutionally-acknowledged, non-established plus non-prohibited religious establishments.

Others plainly foresee the dire and extensive interpersonal effects of obviously extinction-headed disease-and-disability-handicapping misbehaviors relating not to genuine romantic love but rather insane craving to defy established reason and authority in repulsive-to-most deviantly-pseudo-erotic lust.

To wit, the shame of effeminately committing homosodomy has been engrained into human conscience by direct and indirect exposure to verses of and with The Holy Bible both forbidding and condemning wrong and evil homosexual deviance. Assembly-line mistakes resulting in eventual fatalities, lawsuits based upon such, impatience and anger further result, and all sorts of unpleasantly-sordid consequences have, do, and will result from non-compliance against heterosexuality-only Scripture . . . not simply contrary to church-congregants and synagogue-attenders, and mosque-goers, but on everyone in one form or another, in cascading domino-effect-like pollution, defilement, and destructiveness.

So, which theocratic postulations of which governmental theocracy can and should exist within a diverse democracy?

How many times to breathe per minute? Hair nets or facial-hair protective gear worn in surgery, or when preparing fast foods or dust-free workplaces? How much toilet paper to use when wiping oneself, and how many times to reflush a toilet? When, how often, and how long to urinate and defecate? What positions to have sex with the spouse at night, and when, how frequently, and how long? Whether cotton or polyester clothes should be worn, and which color combinations? Long skirt or instead roomy slacks? A back-of-head ponytail or rather hair having been tied up in a bun or chignon when in general public view? Boots on, or instead socks worn with flipflops?

When in a club or association, dress codes for those participating apply, but do not apply for those not belonging to the particular club or association.

Whatever and all of whatever has been written in the Judeo-Christian Bible is meant to apply to everyone, and ALL therein meant to productively enlighten and inform everyone of all ages, skin colors, cultures, nationalities, governments of whatever type, genders, and nationalistic creeds.

In stark contrast, only some things written in the Islamic Koran are (and to a lesser degree and portrayed in a substantially-less-organized much-less-effective format) useful and helpful for self-preservative satisfaction, pleasure, and unity.

Such is the difference between God-chosen Jew Isaac, compared with thrust-out-of-the-Israeli-family-yet-angel-salvaged Ishmael.

Having read whatever of the English-language Koran I have skimmed, it is absolutely obvious to me that the Koran is a work of largely-confusing plagiarism from admittedly-plagiaristic and now-dead Mohammed (who lived 500 years after Christ) -- whose significantly-lamentable reputation in no way comes even close to that of the now-alive-and-destined-to-return-in-supernatural-power Jesus Christ. Such an honest evaluation of Mohammed is not "blasphemy" - but instead is innocently-frank critique comparing the founders of both major world religions.

As much as the Qur'an mimics what is said within the Sacred-66-books Judeo-Christian Holy Bible, those tidbits of descriptive observance and admonition are noteworthy and applicable (like, for instance, pertaining to the very-modest and old-Catholic-order-nuns-like burka and hijab shawls and robes, especially during warm weather . . . rather than lewd and pornographic mopheadedness, sleeveslessness, slackslessness in legs-baring shorts, and noisy soles-slapping soxless feet in sandals) -- though I have detected such Koranic prose is sometimes severely tainted with a non-God-like, non-benign, Trinity-disbelieving, antisemitic and anti-Christian intolerance, demanding involuntary enforcement by sometimes-suicidal-immentality tyrants bent on oppressing those they have no divine right nor commission to harass and disturb.
