What is "Spam?"

Essentially, "spam" is what the police would reasonably consider: "public nuisance" (of whatever reasonably-considered type that happens to be committed (and not "performed") under whatever reasonably-considered circumstance and scenario.

To most folk, it would reasonably be considered a form of non-written "spam" (or public nuisance) for someone to phone a sleeping neighbor or even friend for whatever non-emergency cause anytime between midnight and 7:00 in the morning. Not that it cannot be done, but such discomforting imposition is obviously not at all recommended:

Luke 11:5 And he said to them, "Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves;
11:6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him';
11:7 and he will answer from within, 'Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything'?
11:8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him whatever he needs.
11:9 And I tell you, Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
11:10 For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
11:11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent;
11:12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
11:13 If you then, who are evil [thanks a lot for the compliment!], know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"

Most individuals would reasonably consider it a form of non-written "spam" (or public nuisance) to knock on someone's door or ring their doorbell when that someone is reasonably expected to be sleeping anytime between midnight and 7:00 in the morning.

Many people reasonably consider loud-boom-boom bass-range thuds from a nearby vehicle a form of non-written "spam" (or public nuisance), and thankfully there are - here and there - posted noise-ordinance signs at various quiet zones in certain neighborhoods and shopping centers. There should be a lot more of them....with some call-to-the-police non-emergency number other than 911 available and well-known to quasi-anonymously complain concerning such noisemakers and relay license plate identification of such noxious boom-boom-bass offenders to authorities who promptly do something corrective about it.

Some might query: "But how would I know how someone is going to respond to my solicitation, if I do not solicit him (or her)? What am I: "psychic?"

Who knows if they are going to like, or instead not like, what I want to solicit to them - if I do not solicit them? How am I supposed to know how they are going to respond? Am I to blame for merely soliciting them, with the possibility that they might actually like the solicitation?" "How am I suppose to get people to know what I have to sell and offer them, if I cannot advertise it to them?" "If I do not advertise it to them by solicitation, how are they ever going to find out about it to then perhaps buy it or believe what I have to say to their long-range benefit?"

Romans 10:14 But how are humans to call upon Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher?
10:15 And how can men preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news!"
10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel; for Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?"
10:17 So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ.

One might ask: "Well, aren't doorbells there to ring?" "Aren't phones meant to call people on?" "Aren't sound shops there to install mega-woofer speakers in vehicles for those inside muscle cars and trucks to enjoy the loud thuds of thunderous bass in their music?"

Certain Scripture references immediately come to mind, and they generally involve waiting a while rather than impulsively or impetuously jumping forward:

Exodus 24:12 The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tables of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction."

Ruth 3:18 [Naomi] replied, "Wait, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out, for the man will not rest, but will settle the matter today."

First Samuel 10:8 [Samuel said:] "And you shall go down before me to Gilgal; and hey, I am coming to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, until I come to you and show you what you shall do."
First Samuel 13:8 [Saul] waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him.
13:9 So Saul said, "Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the peace offerings." And he offered the burnt offering.
13:10 As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, hey, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him and salute him.
13:11 Samuel said, "What have you done?" And Saul said, "When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash,
13:12 I said, 'Now the Philistines will come down upon me at Gilgal, and I have not entreated the favor of the LORD'; so I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering."
13:13 And Samuel said to Saul, "You have done foolishly; you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which he commanded you; for now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.

Second Kings 6:32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Now the king had dispatched a man from his presence; but before the messenger arrived Elisha said to the elders, "Do you see how this murderer has sent to take off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold the door fast against him. Is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?"
Second Kings 6:33 And while he was still speaking with them, the king came down to him and said, "This trouble is from the LORD! Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?"

Sometimes, "timing is everything." When to pass a car, and when to not pass a car. When to proceed through a stoplights-controlled intersection, and when to not do so. When to press the accelerator pedal of the four-banger or Corvette, and when to not press it. When to begin to use the turn signal, and when to not use it. When to fool (or "monkey") around with the car radio, and when to not fool around with (or "adjust") the car radio. When to text on the cellphone, and when to not text on the cellphone. When to buckle seat belts, and when to not buckle seat belts. When to chit-chat with your neighbor, and when to stop chit-chatting with your neighbor:

Yes, it is true that doors are meant to knock on, doorbells meant to ring, phones meant to call on....

. . . and publicly-accessible e-mail address are meant to e-mail to?

There must be reasonable give-and-take when it comes to people approaching and encountering and communicating to and even with each other....especially for first time (i.e. first-time encounters).

None of us lives in a shell all by ourselves, nor should we be expected to. None of us is a complete hermit, nor should we be expected to.

But how do we know when to deliberately approach others with the intent of communicating with them for whatever purpose - whether it is to get them to buy something we want to sell them, convey some Christian-doctrine-tract-type message to them as missionaries for our Creator Christ Jesus, or solicit them for dating-related courtship and marriage then spousal sex?

Matthew 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Matthew 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and wow, I am with you always, to the close of the age."

...whether "mailer daemon" likes it or not.

And how do we know how to do it?

By first-time in-person voice solicitation? If that is not possible, nor convenient, by brand-new TV or radio or billboard advertisement practically shoved into every couch-potato's or highway-driver's face? Surprise-assault UPS or FedEx delivery? Illegal-alien carrier pigeon? Strange-tribal smoke signals? Drone-spy-plane Piper Cubs or Cessnas flying high with banners in back? Shrewdly-name-labeled blimps? Facelessly-anonymous Morse Code? Flashing lights out of the blue like from some Navy ship or whatever in the distance? Remote-controlled laser pens? Nameless snail-mail or bulk-mailed letter or flyer? By direct e-mail e-mailed to whoever for whatever reasonable and sensible purpose?

Again, anytime we make ourselves publicly-accessible to the general public, we should expect to be accessed - and not necessarily on our terms whenever and wherever and however. If we do not want to be solicited visually or in whatever way by anyone or everyone or only by certain persons, we have to make ourselves available, non-available, or only partially available for such solicitation to - ourselves - do whatever it takes -- by whatever means and to whatever extent we - ourselves - are reasonable able to, to avoid becoming and getting uncomfortably or inconveniently or hatefully harassed according to our personal opinion.

And obviously, it is (at least to some extent), our responsibility to avoid repeated encounters from some non-desirable source we (in our own personal opinion) consider: "harassment" - as much as we are able to do anything about it.

On the other hand, it is the responsibility of others to reasonably sense and detect that they are being or becoming a harassment against us.

Street-side post office boxes are meant to receive mail - of whatever type - be such city-hall notifications, colorful-and-eye-catching partial-porn-pix business flyers (a.k.a. "junk" mail), bills to pay, personal letters of interest to us - whatever.

There are orderly and polite ways to reveal and express understandable discrimination as to what non-first-time mail we continue or might continue to get, and what non-first-time e-mail we actually do continue to get.

"Spam" is not "whatever I say it is" -- and that not merely applies to yours truly, but also to you the reader.

Sometimes, what we see - even for the first time - is unlawful and illegal....not merely distasteful against our particular or peculiar preference.

Case in point, and my favorite illustration of visual spam:

Female humans, especially those aware of how they are non-ignorantly mis-attired in general public view, are an immodest and indecent harassment to every male at large who they are not presently married to nor intend to become married to, whenever they - especially during warmer weather - impose sensuously enticing erotically-titillating loose long hair (not tied into a single back-of-head ponytail or put into an up-do chignon or bun, or equivalent), or exhibit naked arms with sleeveslessness, or show off nude legs with shortened-or-slitted skirts or shorts instead of slacks, or flaunt bared toes in soxless-feet sandals.

Such is always an immoral infraction of imposed visual spam, whether a first-time view or repeated and continuing view -- and whether indifferently and callously imposing onesself - senselessly and needlessly - in open even-potential view of hapless victims....or as a deliberately-defiant harlot-look-alike mis-dressed terrorist to and against some person or group as a disruptive non-asked-for intrusion.

Uttering profane language can be somewhat similar spam to a lot of people, or body-odor spam, or strong-smelling-stinky-perfume spam, or whatever is reasonably deemed a Bible-defined irritation to and against people in general.

Sometimes, we ourselves are either considered or mis-considered spam when we do get out of someone else's way, or they are spam when they do not get out of our way, or do not leave them alone per their request to "give me space" (to which request we might ask: "How much?" or: "For how long?").

However, anti-social hostility is generally not Scripturally condoned:

Romans 15:7 Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

The best guide to know what it what, what should and should not be considered "spam," and when whatever is acceptable or not acceptable, is to study the total contents of The Holy Bible over a reasonable period of time -- which will do wonders in enlightening readers of such Scripture as to what is appropriate and what is not appropriate, what is legitimate in contrast to what is not legitimate.

But even after persons receiving non-wanted solicitation have communicated their objection to the solicitor to not solicit them anymore, there yet has to some give-and-take resiliency. Perhaps the objection was not made clear enough, or definitive enough to the solicitor. Maybe what is solicited is so important, crucial, and of such an urgent nature to either or both the solicited and the solicitor as to require the solicitation to be repeated or emphasized. Maybe the solicitor was involuntarily or accidentally not paying attention, or sort of deaf at the time, to the solicited's understandable and reasonable request to stop, or there was some communication snafu and breakdown requiring congenial re-issue of the cease-and-desist request.

For example, sometimes an e-mailer gets the message (like when using g-mail), that the sent e-mail which has been sent is "delayed?" Why does not g-mail come right out with it and say that the would-be recipient rejected the e-mail, whether "permanently" (in g-mail's opinion) or instead "temporarily" (again, in g-mail's opinion), and supposedly only "temporarily" as if after the recipient thinks it all over he or she finally decides to open the e-mail and/or read the e-mailed message? And is the problem that some recipient of some e-mailed message is or has been somewhat senile in presuming that he or she deleted some e-mailed message but actually did not delete it, or a solicitor forgets that he deleted the name on his e-mail listing, and then blames the e-mailer or e-mailed for continuing to send e-mail or for presumed-continued complaining or despite an imagined stop request which was never sent by the e-mail recipient?

Consider two types of solicitation, or actions involving solicitations....and appropriate or inappropriate responses to each:

#1 -

Isaiah 30:9 For they are a rebellious people, lying sons, sons who will not hear the instruction of the LORD;
Isaiah 30:10 who say to the seers, "See not"; and to the prophets, "Prophesy not to us what is right; speak to us smooth things, prophesy illusions,
Isaiah 30:11 leave the way, turn aside from the path, let us hear no more of the Holy One of Israel."

Amos 7:16 Now therefore hear the word of the LORD. You say, "Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not preach against the house of Isaac."
Amos 7:17 Therefore thus says the LORD: "Your wife shall be a harlot in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be parceled out by line; you yourself shall die in an unclean land, and Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land."

Micah 2:6 "Do not preach" (thus they [hypocritically] preach), "one should not preach of such things; disgrace will not overtake us."

Zechariah 7:11 But they refused to positively respond, and turned a stubborn shoulder, and stopped their ears that they might not hear.

John 12:40 "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes and perceive with their heart, and turn for me to heal them."

Acts 7:57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together upon him.

First Corinthians 9:16 For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!

Jeremiah 23:16 Thus says the LORD of hosts: "Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes; they speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.
27:9 So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your soothsayers, or your sorcerers, who are saying to you, 'You shall not serve the king of Babylon.
27:14 Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are saying to you, 'You shall not serve the king of Babylon,' for it is a lie which they are prophesying to you."
27:16 Then I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying: Thus says the LORD: "Do not listen to the words of your prophets who are prophesying to you, saying, 'Hey, the vessels of the LORD's house will now shortly be brought back from Babylon,' for it is a lie which they are prophesying to you.
27:17 Do not listen to them; serve the king of Babylon and live. Why should this city become a desolation?"
29:8 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: "Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams which they dream..."

Second Corinthians 6:17 "Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them," says the Lord, "and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you..."

Titus 3:10 As for a person who is factious, after admonishing him (or her) once or twice, have nothing more to do with him (or her),
Titus 3:11 knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he/she is self-condemned.

Second John 1:9 Any one who goes ahead and does not stay in the doctrine of Christ does not have God; he/she who resides in the doctrine has both the Father and the Son.
Second John 1:10 If any one comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him/her into the house or give him (or her) any greeting;
Second John 1:11 for he/she who greets him (or her) shares his (or her) wicked work.
